A suspension of immature glial cells was prepared by gentle teasing and treatment with E D T A (I/5000) of the corpus cal losum of 15 days old rats. Fol lowing centr i fusation the cells were resuspended in Eagle's M.E.M., and incubated for I-2 hour with H ~ thymidine (I0 Nci/ml) 100 ~I of this suspension were then injected at the thoracic level of the spinal cord, just after transection of dorsal columns. The animals were sacrif iced after three months, and the cord was prepared for light and electron microscopy. | ~ sections showed extensive degeneration of dorsal columns and the presence, in their i ~ e d i a t e vicinity, but outside of the cord, of a solid transplant. This transplant contained many astrocytes surrounding axons, several of which were myelinated by schwann cells.
