In situ hybridization of labelled eDNA eitber revers~ tcanseribed from polyadenylated RNA isolated from same aged brain or labelled probes derived from recombinant DNA clones that hybridize to mRNAs that encode specific p r ~ c i n s ~>i iuterest is making it possible to answer previously unapproachable questi~ns. Much ~f the information known about the distribution of specific proteins and pept~dts and their localization within specific cell types in the brain has been demonstrated using immunobistochemistry. Combining these two techniques make it possible to determine whether a cell that contains a specific protein also possesses the mRNA to synthesize the protefn. At this roundtable, Rob Milner (Salk Institute) will discuss the progress of in situ hybridizations he and Bertram Block are doing using eDNA probes t~ pept [de hormone mRNAs. Linda McAll ister will discuss both immunnhistochemistr~ and in sit,~ hv'0ridization experiments she is doing in collaboration with Richard Schel]er (Stanford). Marcelle Morrison and Sue Griffin will discuss their attempts at ~,mlbinin~ immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization on the same brain sections.
