Osteoporosis is currently better prevented than treated, and the efforts of the physician should be aimed at prevention. Small‐framed, white and Asian, hypoestrogenic women with life style factors or medical conditions associated with impaired calcium metabolism or increased bone loss have the greatest risk of developing osteoporosis. Estrogen therapy in the hypoestrogenic woman has a significant protective benefit. Bone density studies are now available for at‐risk patients to detect the presence or development of bone loss. Therapy can now be instituted before significant bone loss has occurred.
