Although the prevalence of gonorrheal and chlamydial infections varies based on patient population, these infections remain a concern, especially for young women. Management should reflect the fact that a large proportion of isolates of N. gonorrhoeae are resistant to penicillin, tetracycline, or spectinomycin. Because up to 45% of women with gonorrheal infection have coexistent chlamydial infection, the treatment should be effective against both organisms. The sexual partners of infected women should be tested, if possible, and treated appropriately.
