Einstein postulated the potential of laser light in the early 1900s. ‘The physical properties of light and its relationship to electron activation levels were described by Niels Bohr in 1913. The first working laser, a ruby laser that could be fired only intermittently, was developed by Theodore Maiman in 1960, and Pate1 at Bell Laboratories built the first working carbon dioxide (CO,) laser in 1961. Leon Goldman introduced lasers into surgery in the early 1960s. Kaplan described the first gynecologic use of the laser in 1973, when he reported the use of the CO, laser for the treatment of cervical erosions (1).
