Intrauterine extraamniotic prostaglandin supplemented by curettage was shown to be an efficient and practical method for termination of first trimester pregnancy in the hands of inexperienced staff. The incidence of infection was at first unacceptably high, but was reduced to the levels commonly found with suction evacuation by adding prophylactic metronidazole. There was no cervical or uterine trauma.
