H 2 ‐forming N 5 , N 10 ‐methylenetetrahydromethanopterin dehydrogenase catalyzes the reversible dehydrogenation of N 5 , N 10 ‐methylenetetrahydromethanopterin (CH 2 = H 4 MPT) to N 5 , N 10 ‐methenyltetrahydromethanopterin (CH = H 4 MPT + ) and H 2 . In D 2 O both HD and D 2 are formed from CH 2 = H 4 MPT and in H 2 O both HD and H 2 from CD 2 = H 4 MPT. Evidence is presented that HD is not an intermediate in the formation of D 2 and H 2 , respectively.
