The activity, the protein content and the manganese properties of photosystem II have been compared after photoinhibition of isolated thylakoid membranes. The results show a concomitant disappearance of the oxygen evolving activity and the ability to form the S 2 ‐state multiline EPR signal. The D 1 ‐protein is degraded in a subsequent event which closely correlates to release of manganese from the thylakoid membranes.
