Polymerized actin hydrolyzes bound ATP in a reaction that depends on the concentration of polymerized ATP‐actin, not on the rate of incorporation of ATP‐actin into the polymer. The apparent first order rate constant is about 0.07 s −1 at 21°C in 50 mM KCl with 1 mM MgCl 2 or CaCl 2 .
