Two kinds of proteinacious substances which bind to α pheromone were isolated from heat‐shock extract of a mating type cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae . One has M r ∼300 000 and the other M r 58 000. We purified the smaller binding protein by successive application of DEAE and CM‐cellulose chromatography, gel filtration, and isoelectrofocusing. The purified binding protein showed a single band by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. This binding protein was detected in a cells but not in α cells.
