* Undergraduate Student Trainee from Shibaura Institute of Technology, 1977-1978 thesis [ 17-251, even if the extent of deuterium incorporation is considerably low (-1%). In this connection, our previous 2H NMR study on griseofulvin from [2-?H3]acetate [ 171 showed that 6’-methyl group of the chain-starter is apparently like CHD2. In order to make the origin ofhydrogen atom clear, we attempted to analyze 2H NMR spectra of griseofulvin samples supplemented with: (a) sodium [2-‘3C,2-2H3]acetate; (b) sodium acetate and deuterium oxide in medium; (c) sodium [2-‘jC]acetate and deuterium oxide. Here we report evidence of participation of medium water into the methyl group of chain-starter, with use of various kinds of acetate precursors, as a result of hydrogen exchange.
