Summary Sodium bicarbonate can be determined directly in the presence of sodium carbonate and soap by heating the mixture under controlled conditions. The carbon dioxide liberated by heating is estimated gravimetrically and calculated to solium bicarbonate. The balance of the carbon dioxide content of the sample is liberated by acid, estimated gravimetrically, and calculated to sodium carbonate. The procedure is applicable in the presence of synthetic detergents. It is rapid and yields accurate results.
