Asclepias speciosa is currently being evaluated as a potential hydrocarbon‐producing crop. Chemical analyses of the nonpolar extractables of the above ground parts of this plant showed that pentacyclic triterpenoids and sterols account for over 90% of the refined hexane extract. In addition, low molecular weight natural rubber (cis‐1,4‐polyisoprene), of potential use as an elastomer, was obtained from the crude hexane extract.
