Apollo Computer's Domain 5080 Emu-lator is an integrated IBM 5080 graphics terminal emulation that lets users simultaneously run mainframe and workstation applications from the same workstation display. The product integrates mainframe graphics applications such as CADAM and CATIA with workstation applications such as Interleaf Workstation Publishing Software to streamline technical documentation tasks. The emulator combines communications hardware and software and is compatible with Apollo's family of Domain workstations. According to the manufacturer , it emulates IBM 5080 graphics terminals and the standard 5080-style peripherals-keyboard, lighted-function program keyboard, data tablet, and input dials-without requiring special hardware. Its graphics software emulates 5080 graphics order codes and display-list func-tionality, and supports Apollo's Graphics Service Routines to take advantage of the graphics hardware on each Domain workstation. A workstation user can view a CADAM or CATIA application in one display window and simultaneously refer to applications in other display windows. While in the window mode, the user can choose a portion of the screen or scale the 5080 graphics to fit the window. An alternative full-screen mode provides the maximum screen area for editing. The emulator can integrate 5080 graphics with workstation technical documentation software. For example, Interleaf's WPS running in a window on a workstation can capture a 5080 image directly from the emulator's window, copy it into a WPS document, rescale the results, and allow additional graphics to be superimposed on the 5080 input. The emulator provides access to IBM mainframes via local-and wide-area Domain networks to enable information sharing among workstation and time-sharing system users. The emulator includes a Spectragraphics DSCC high-speed channel interface to IBM main-frames, which communicates with a Domain network through a Domain gateway server. Each server can support up to 16 simultaneous 5080 sessions, and each DSCC can directly drive up to two gateway servers. A single network can support many gateways. The Domain 5080 Emulator is available in a complete bundled system including the Spectragraphics DSCC, interface boards, Domain DSP90 gateway server, and software site licenses for all workstations on a network. Prices for local configurations range from $44,500 for four users to $54,500 for 16 users; for remote configurations from $59,900 for four users to $69,900 for 16 users. Local configuration upgrades of existing DSCCs are also available. Summagraphics' new model in its Microgrid Series II is a 24"x 36" tablet for CAD systems and PC-based workstations. Like the other models in the line, the …
