Abstract It was shown in a recent paper that the concentration c of remaining chlorophyll or carotene in rapeseed oil during the bleaching process follows a rate formula, log c/c o =– k √t, characteristic of flocculation of colloids. Thus, the pigments are particulate and colloidally dispersed in the oil. The rate constant k was proportional to the added amount of clay. This paper reports experiments with palm oil. The same kinetics as those with rapeseed are valid. The effects of various parameters on the rate have been studied. The mechanism of the process is discussed.
