Tektronix has announced a line of low-price color graphics terminals. All three models in the new 4200 series offer local graphics segments, true local zoom and pan, multiple views, surfaces, graph text, and graphics input. All can display graphics in 16 colors (palette of 64) with eight user-selected alphanumeric colors independent of the graphics. Custom characters can be saved on the host computer for down-loading to the terminal. The fine-pitch, shadow-masked VDT has a 60-Hz noninterlaced refresh rate, with pixel resolution of 480 x 360 for Model 4205, and 640 x 480 for Models 4207 and 4208. All models have a detachable keyboard and two-speed joy-disk; a three-button mouse is optional. The 4207 and 4208 also have tablet support. The 4200 series supports the com-pany's 469X color ink jet printers, 463X video-output monochrome copiers, and 451 OA color graphics rasterizer. Data sent to the terminal system's memory can go on to a copier, while the user interacts with terminal graphics. All three models are compatible with Tek 4100 terminals and 4120 workstations. They are VT100 compatible, with VT220 compatibility available next year, according to the company. Enter Computer's CAD wide-bed plotter for use with PCs and other computers costs $3995. The SP1000 offers continuous adjustability for paper sizes A to D (metric sizes A4 to Al) and compatibility with Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language. It runs with AutoCAD, VersaCAD, and other PC-based software design packages. With a servo motor that runs at 24" per second, the plotter handles ANSI, ISO, and architectural-size bond, vellum, or film. Pen force or pressure can be adjusted from 10 to 57 grams for output with felt-tip, ceramic-tip, rollerball, or liquid-ink pens. Mechanical resolution is .00025". The plotter measures 8.5" x 39" x 8" (without stand) and weighs less than 50 pounds. Iris Graphics has introduced a smaller color-proofing system with many of the features of its large-format 2044 color ink jet printer (see IEEE CG&A, Feb. 1986, p.71). Designed for users of electronic color prepress systems (ECPS), the new 2024 can make an 18" x 24" full-color proof in about 12 minutes, at a cost of less than 25 cents, according to the manufacturer. The 2024 has a 24" x 24" imaging area and performs filmless imaging on coated and noncoated paper, newsprint, clear polyester, and cloth. Image resolution is 240 dpi, horizontally and vertically. The proofer will print data from an ECPS via mag tape …
