Alkyl allyl thioethers were prepared by reaction of longchain primary thiols in hexane with allyl bromide in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst (tetrabutylammonium bromide), and aqueous alkali and were hydroxylated to rac‐1‐S‐alkylglycerols by means of a novel reagent, cetyltrimethylammonium permanganate, in dichloromethane.
