Abstract A spectrophotometric assay was developed for the quantitative determination of carboxymethyloxysuccinate, a new detergent builder. The method was based on the color produced with β‐naphthol in 92.5% (w/w) sulfuric acid. As little as 1.0 μg of carboxymethyloxysuccinate can be measured. Determination of the builder in primary sewage effluent and river water, and interference studies were also reported.
