Summary A series of branched‐chain and odd‐numbered straight‐chain fatty acids has been recently isolated from ox, sheep, and butterfat. Substantial amounts of trans ‐unsaturated acids have been found in the depot fats of ruminants, but none or little in nonruminants. Mechanisms of the formation of all these constituents based on the activity of rumen bacteria are suggested.
