Summary In this discussion we have reviewed the production of alkylene oxide derivatives which are becoming increasingly important surfactants. The process has been shown to be comparatively simple although the products are very complex mixtures. The course of the reaction has been indicated for the most important types of products and the reaction variables discussed. Perhaps the only disadvantage of this unit process is the hazardous nature of the alkylene oxides. These can be handled safely however, as proven by the safety record of the current producers.
