URING the last four years the technical literature of fats and oils has included a number of papers dealing with the use of infrared spectroscopy as a tool for qualitative identification, quantitative determinations, and the elucidation of chemical structures of fatty acid materials. A chronological listing of the most important dates in the history of the development of the applications of infrared absorption spectroscopy to fatty acid derivatives has been prepared to illustrate the phenomenal growth in this development, particularly since 1950 (Table i).
