The ability to identify the different acyl groups present in lubricants composed of mixed acid esters of trimethylol propane by 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is demonstrated. The technique discriminates between esters with acyl groups containing between 5 and 10 carbon atoms and can be used similarly to identify acyl groups in pentaerythritol or neopentyl glycol ester lubricants.
