The application of countercurrent distribution to the fractionation of lipids both for analytical and preparative purposes, is presented. The method has been applied to the separation of a wide variety of lipids including: fatty acids, methylesters of fatty acids, glycerides, phospholipids, derivatives of phospholipids, complex lipid mixtures and non‐lipid contaminants.
