Methyl docosahexaenoate was selected as a model system for studying the autoxidation of highly unsaturated fatty acids. The ester was oxidized at 50 C for 28 hr and the volatiles collected by high vacuum distillation and fractionated by gas chromatography. A number of aldehydes, aldehyde esters, hydrocarbons and methyl esters were identified. Mechanisms are proposed for the formation of these compounds.
