Ergosta‐6(7),8(14),25(27)‐trien‐3β‐ol, ergosta‐5(6),7(8),25(27)‐trien‐3β‐ol, ergosterol, 25(27)‐dehydroergosterol (protothecasterol), ergosta‐7,25(27)‐dien‐3β‐ol and ergost‐7‐en‐3β‐ol have been isolated from cells of Prototheca wickerhamii . The structures of the compounds have been determined in stereochemical detail by a series of chromatographic and spectral techniques. The results are interpreted to imply that whereas P. wickerhamii is non‐photosynthetic and yeast‐like in appearance and synthesizes ergosterol, the organism can be biochemically distinguished from yeast and considered an alga in part through the detection of other sterols described herein, notably those with Δ 25(27) side chains.
