Abstract During the past few years, several oilseed solvent extraction plants have had severe explosions and fires causing death, injury and property damage. One city had part of its sewer system destroyed by a hexane explosion resulting from a solvent spill from an extraction plant into the sewer. This paper discusses a few of these incidents and how to prevent future disasters by new plant process designs, operation and safety procedures.
