The higher hydrocarbons of the atheromatous plaque have been examined and the major compounds present have been found to be a series of n ‐alkanes (C 17 ‐C 31 ), squalene, cholest‐5‐ene and a cholestadiene. Identification of these compounds was based on chromatographic correlations and mass spectrometry.
