Summary A model for the simulation of simple snail tracks is presented. The parameters required by the model include: (1) the distribution of turn angles at each step; (2) the mean and (3) the variance of step sizes; (4) the initial bearing angle and (5) the proportion of time spent moving. The model readily generates realistic tracks and predicts adequately values of parameters not specifically built into the model. If observations on the above five parameters are collected at the correct scale, then we suggest the model represents a general, canonical description of movement. The notion of what constitutes correctness is discussed.
