Summary A modification is proposed for the moments method for estimating a fitness function that was discussed in an earlier paper ( Manly , 1976b). This modification ensures that fitness estimates are always positive. The theory has been worked out for a fitness function of any number of variables and a computer program has been written to carry out the iterative calculations needed for estimation.
