Radar, dropsonde, aircraft and satellite data obtained during a FASTEX intensive observing period are combined to give a unique description of multiple cloud heads in a rapidly developing mid‐latitude cyclone. The cloud heads are shown to be associated with stacked slantwise frontal circulations with ascent rates of around 10 cm/s. Copyright © 2002 Royal Meteorological Society.
