Interdecadal variability in north‐east Australian regional tropical cyclone formation is investigated. It is found that mean tropical cyclone formation is significantly higher during positive phases of the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) than during negative phases. This is related to changes in vertical wind shear in the north‐east Australian region. Copyright © 2003 Royal Meteorological Society.
