The pressure distribution in hydrodynamic journal bearings is usually calculated by the Reynolds fluid film equation, a linear elliptical partial differential equation. Applying appropriate boundary conditions, e.g., Reynolds boundary conditions, the governing boundary value problem becomes nonlinear. For solving this nonlinear boundary value problem, there exist several established methods. The paper at hand presents an alternative approach using an ALE (Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian) formulation.
