A major problem in using the finite element method (FEM) for solving numerous engineering problems is the assessment of discretisation errors and the design of a suitable mesh. To overcome this problem, adaptive finite element methods have been developed. In this paper, we illustrate a general h‐adaptive procedure and we present a comparison of the performance of three different density functions.
