Abstract The tendency of reducing energy consumption leads to extensive use of lightweight structures in vehicle dynamics. As a consequence bodies of cars and trains become sensitive to structural vibrations. For damping of such vibrations, the use of passive absorbers is a common approach. Passive systems, however, have to be tuned for a given resonance frequency of the structure and are sensitive to changes of this frequency due to variations in loads or excitation. Mechatronics enables the use of actively controlled absorption systems that don't lack this disadvantage.
