A new numerical‐experimental method for identification of mechanical properties of composite materials is outlined. For the first time it is proposed to use the design of experiments to solve the identification problems. The basic idea of the proposed approach is that a simple mathematical model is determined only by the information about the response of the material in the reference points of the design of experiments. Therefore, a significant reduction (about 50‐100 times) of calculations of identification functional can be achieved in comparison with using a conventional methods of minimization. Examples of identification of elastic properties of laminated composites from the measured eigenfrequencies of the rectangular plates are discussed.
