A review of ARMAX modelling and the approximations of the differential equations of motion are given in previous publications. Here ARMAX modelling based on integral equations in structural dynamics using direct numerical integration equations is investigated. The result is an ARMAX representation for a pre‐given accuracy for numerical purposes. Various integration methods lead to various ARMAX models. Taking into account the resulting estimation errors several ARMAX representations are also compared. It is shown that the inverse problem, the determination of physical parameters from the AR and MA coefficients leads to a unique solution.
