Calculating the periods of long standing waves in closed oblong basins is a classical problem within limnology and oceanography. Particular difficulties arise when the basin under consideration displays topographical variations, and in general it proves necessary to resort to approximative procedures for these cases. Traditionally the resulting eigenvalue problem has been resolved with collocation methods, but in the present study it is shown that a perturbation technique can be used instead.
