The overall elastic constants of a particulate composite material are theoretically estimated. The material is assumed to consist of a high concentration of randomly arranged, nearly rigid spherical particles embedded in an isotropic, elastic matrix. Initially, the load transfer problem between two neighbouring particles separated by a thin layer of matrix material is solved. The overall (effective) elastic constants of the composite are expressed in terms of the elastic constants of the matrix and individual particles.
