The paper deals with the existence and uniqueness of a solution of a variational inequality for the obstacle problem of the shallow shell reinforced with stiffening ribs. The obstacle problem is the formulated as a direct variational problem. Next we construct a finite element approximation of the obstacle problem, and we prove an error estimate of the approximation.
