Using the method of matched asymptotic expansions the unsteady free convection boundary layer flow past a vertical flat plate is obtained when the plate temperature oscillates about a non‐zero mean. It is found that when the Prandtl number is not unity, the solution far downstream reveals a double boundary layer, the inner layer being a shear layer having a double‐deck structure. The skin‐friction has a phase lag π/4 and the wall heat transfer has a phase lead π/4 over that of the surface temperature oscillations.
