A method is given for the decomposition of certain boundary‐value problems which contain Laplacian and non‐symmetric operators. For Hamiltonian systems this allows the application of upper and lower bounding functionals of dual extremum principles. The method is illustrated in the context of magnetohydrodynamic duct flow.
