It is shown that if a change of the argument function is made in a functional the value of the n‐th order Coleman‐Noll approximation is unaltered. The result means, for example, that any suitably invariant measure of strain may be used in developing an approximation to a functional constitutive equation in continuum mechanics. Also, the transformation of an approximation from one strain measure to another is developed.
