Use is made of the equations of cylindrical shell theory to obtain approximate expressions for the moments of the shears and for the shear stress at the boundary. Using these results, we are able to find approximate expressions for the torsional rigidity and the maximum shear stress which depend only on the geometrical properties of the cross‐section. ‐Some comparisons are made with exact solutions.
