Based on the von Kármán 's equation of plates with large deflections, theoretical solutions are presented for the postbuckling behavior of a simply supported infinite strip under shear. Galerkin 's method is used and the problem is solved in the two limiting cases where the edges are freely movable and perfectly immovable towards each other. Through numerical calculations, the connections of the overall shear deformation, effective width, form of the buckled surface and stress state of the plate, with applied shear load, are clarified. The load‐carrying capacity of the plate is also determined under the yield condition of von Mises.
