Using a modified form of the stress‐strain relations for visco‐elastic materials, some problems on steady flow have been solved in a closed form. An extra normal effect lacking in both the Newtonian and the non‐Newtonian approaches has been found. The analysis is shown to have application in the study of gels formed by lyophillic solutions, an extreme illustration of which is table jelly. The results are found to be in good agreement with experiments.
