Unstable CH 3 SeI 3 is prepared in two ways from dimethyl diselenide. According to its crystal structure determination it occurs as [CH 3 SeI 2 ] + I – with iodine iodine contacts between the ions. The previously published [pyridineH] 2 + [SeI 6 ] 2– turns out as a mixture of [pydidineH] + I 5 – , [pyridineH + ] 2 [I 4 ] 2– , and Se.
