The heteroleptic cluster compound (W 6 I 8 )Cl 4 was prepared by thermal conversion of the homoleptic clusters W 6 I 12 and W 6 Cl 12 at 700 °C to yield a bright yellow powder. The presence of the smaller chlorido ligands in apical positions of [(W 6 I 8 )Cl 6 ] 2– creates nearly spherically clusters showing thermal and chemical inertness. Photoluminescence studies revealed a strong red phosphorescence from excited spin‐triplet states.
