The cover picture shows three approaches (biological, heterogeneous, and homogeneous systems) that focus on the challenging task of dinitrogen activation and functionalization. Contributions from these research areas are highlighted in this special issue. The red background contains a portion of the nitrogenase enzyme quaternary structure, with the active site (the iron‐molybdenum cofactor, FeMoco) featured on the top right. The bottom right picture depicts N 2 fixation at a heterogeneous surface, akin to the Haber‐Bosch process. On the top left is a bis(dinitrogen) complex, trans ‐[Mo(N 2 ) 2 (P Et N R P Et ) 2 ] (P Et N R P Et = Et 2 PCH 2 N( R )CH 2 PEt 2 ; R ‐groups on N, and Et groups on P truncated for clarity) supported by a diphosphine ligand scaffold containing a pendant amine base in the second coordination sphere as a strategy to promote the reduction of N 2 . Treatment with acid generates the products on the bottom left: a seven‐coordinate Mo bis(dinitrogen) hydride, trans ‐[Mo(H)(N 2 ) 2 (P Et N R P Et ) 2 ] + , and a Mo‐hydrazido triflate complex, trans ‐[Mo(NNH 2 )(OTf)(P Et N(H) R P Et ) 2 ] 2+ . Details are discussed in the article by M. T. Mock et al. on pp. 105ff. The authors gratefully acknowledge Jonathan M. Darmon (PNNL) for designing the cover picture.
