Although CrO 3 and chromate(VI) salts are familiar laboratory chemicals, most compounds containing Cr VI or Cr V are highly reactive and easily reduced, and those of Cr V are prone to disproportionation. As a result although CrO 2 Cl 2 was first described by Berzelius (1824) and its ability to activate C–H bonds reported by Étard (1877), relatively few complexes of CrO 2 Cl 2 or CrOCl 3 have been characterised in detail. The cover pictures shows structures of several examples and their interconversions which are discussed in the paper by Levason, Reid and Zhang on pp. 35ff.
