A coordination polymer of the formula 1 ∞ [Pr(BSB) 3 (py) 2 ] constituted of bis(salicylato)borate anions ([BSB] – ) and Pr 3+ was synthesized as single crystals from the sodium salt under solvothermal conditions in pyridine. The formation of sodium chloride is a driving force valid for a reaction under solvothermal and ionothermal conditions using the ionic liquid (IL) 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium‐bis(salicylato)borate [EMIM][BSB]. For the formation of isoconstitutional compounds the latter reaction also requires a certain amount of pyridine, which is beneficial for crystallization. In addition, a different precursor has to be employed: whilst the solvothermal reaction can be carried out with the anhydrous halide Ln Cl 3 , the IL‐based reaction is only successful with the complex [ Ln Cl 3 (py) 4 ] as precursor.
